A number of historic buildings make up the Avenue Hotel. Part of these premises even dates back to the 17th century. An interesting fact about the building: during the Golden Age it was used as a depot by the 'V.O.C.' (United East India Company). Since that time the building has had many different owners and served different purposes. It has now turned into a modern hotel, that is up to contemporary standards. The rooms are divided over the different parts of the hotel so they all have a unique style and shape. In these comfortable rooms you will find a hair dryer and a bath or shower. This 14th century court is a former Beguines' court, it still houses the English Reformed Church. Or learn about the best known hiding place of World War II in the 'Anne Frank Huis'. In this area there are numerous sights, such as the wax statues in Madame Tussauds, the 'Koninklijk Paleis' (royal palace), the National Monument and the well known Red Light District.

OVERALL OUR STAY WAS GREAT. PLEASANT HELPFUL STAFF.

THE ONLY DOWNSIDE WAS THE BREAKFAST. IT DIDN'T MATTER WHAT TIME WE CAME DOWN. DAY1 8.30, DAY 2 7.15, DAY 3 8.00 AND DAY 4 7.30. THE HOT BUFFET BREAKFAST, WAS NEVER HOT. THIS WAS ALSO THE CASE ON OUR PREVIOUS STAY 2 YEARS AGO. BUT IT DIDN'T SPOIL OUR STAY.

Location

The room I was given this time was tiny. For its price - considerably more than I pay for good 4 star hotels in the UK - I was surprised. I was also surprised that breakfast on Saturday was not available until 7.30 a.m..............which I when I had to leave, with out the benefit of breakfast. I won't stay at this hotel again.

Good value city centre base

Hotel offers good value for money and is ideally situated in the middle of the city centre with easy access to most tourist attractions within walking distance, with the possible exception of the Rijksmuseum which is a short tram ride away. Rooms, and the hotel generally, clean and well heated if a little small.

Reception staff not particularly welcoming on arrival. Access to the lift is controlled by your room card and this together a front door controlled from reception imply the management has some security concerns. In single rooms the wash basin is in the room itself whilst the WC and shower are in a small 'wet room'.

Overall service was more than adequate. Excellent location, easy of access to every place of interest, most within walking distance. American breakfast provided was very good; food was fresh, coffee excellent.

The carpeted floor in the bedroom was filthy. If we walked barefoot the soles of our feet became all dirty. Some improvement required in this area.

I would stay again only if I was traveling alone and on low budget.

Location, helpful staff, early check in(10am), included breakfast. Good for the price. No charge for half a dozen calls to other cities, thanks to front desk staff.

Noisy, awful broken showerhead, splasshing all over the place good luck trying to shower without getting your hair(or the entire bathroom for that matter)wet! (I stayed at a 5star the next night (saturday)right at beautiful leidseplein for just 20 euros more and that's 10 min ride from central station with tram running every 5 min. I even walked back and forth a couple of times, takes half hour tops) So if you don't mind paying extra 20-30 euros you can get a 4 or 5 star hotel with queen size bed, that is if you find the special deals some hotels offer.

Return Visitor Very Pleased with This Hotel.

I have stayed a number of times before (5 I believe) and just returned from two stays recently on an extended european vacation. I have been quite pleased, having referred the Avenue to others for its exceptional value, location and service, returned with a friend, alone and took my sister last year for her birthday. Very clean, fantastic location, pleasant, knowledgeable and professional desk personnel. Very clean rooms and housekeeping. Breakfast more than adequate. I am exceptionally pleased with this hotel and it's location. Couldn't say enough - you go straight to the top of my list. I travel about four or five times a year in Europe and you do very well in comparison to peers at all levels. Very nice to see you added airconditioning. I have felt very secure and safe think your hotel is ideal for men or women travelling alone.

Please consider installing a dam in showers (will save on mess with water extending to carpet and using so many towels to block water flowing out or onto carpet, cleaning up. Also, it is something of a falling hazard with water getting everywhere from the shower.) 2. In winter the heat in common areas and rooms set way too high and I had to open window to cool down room but cannot do that at nite for sleep due to traffic sounds, so became too warm (costly to both your the fuel bill and planet as well.) Thank you for your great service.

This hotel was the cherry on the cake!

Superb location: walking distance form station, Dam Sq and Red Light District but still surprisingly quiet! Breakfast was good, wide selection of cheese, bread, cereal, you name it! Price for room was rather good, I was expecting a more basic room and was pleasantly surprised to find out that the room was actually big, comfortable, clean and with a lovely view! I would definitey recommend this lovely hotel.

Just to be fussy....no toaster in breakfast room! Receptionists were never rude but they seemed quite unfriendly. Might just be me being paranoid though.

Never Again Pay A Little Extra For Quality !

Fantastic Location

Single Rooms are so small like a broom cupboard, has a shower with a hole in the bathroom floor, so every time you shower the whole en-suite room floods! Asked for a room with a bath in advance, this request was NOT honoured. Breakfast food was only lukewarm and not worth bothering with, the hotel staff don’t seem to care very much about your comments. The only good point of this hotel is its location. I would NOT stay again!

The breakfast was great--lots of choice. Front desk personnel were friendly and helpful. Location is walking distance from train station, although the hotel is on a busy street.

Not typical,I'm sure, but when we arrived at our room in the evening, it had not been cleaned or made up from the previous occupants. Apparently, one of the cleanup crew had been fired that day and didn't let the hotel know that he/she hadn't cleaned the room. The hotel found another, smaller room for us (which was clean), but the AC wasn't working, and opening the window let in the street noise.
