This café dates back to 1606, which makes it the oldest café in Amsterdam. Previously it was located at the harbour and was used as an inn for sailors and tradesmen. Nowadays the clientele is mainly a mixture of regular customers and tourists. Many things here remind of bygone days, such as the thin layer of sand on the wooden floor, that has been customary for ages. Or the fact that no music is played, which makes this the perfect place for a tourist to have a conversation with a local customer.
