Description

Sandton Hotel de Filosoof Amsterdam is one of the most inspiring and unique hotels in Amsterdam. It is established in a few historic buildings at just a stone's throw away from the Vondelpark. All rooms are decorated in an exclusive style that refer to a certain philosopher or philosophical theme.

This hotel is beautifully located in quiet surroundings on the edge of the Vondelpark. While it is ideal for relaxation, you can also take a stroll through the park to the Leidseplein or one of the renowned museums. The sophisticated shopping street P.C. Hooftstraat and the Concertgebouw are within close range as well. Because everybody is different on the outside as well as the inside, all 38 rooms in this hotel are decorated in different styles referring to a certain philosopher or philosophical theme, for example there is a Confucius, Nietzsche and Spinoza room. The staff at the reception will do their utmost to honour your preference, depending on availability.

This unique hotel is equipped with two multifunctional rooms for 2 to 30 people where you can have a private or business meeting in an exceptional atmosphere. You can choose from several catering arrangements to complement your meeting. Leisure guests can relax in the beautiful garden, the cosy bar/lobby or library. Though all rooms are furnished differently, they are all equipped with a private bathroom, television and telephone.

Food and Drinks

Guests can enjoy the continental breakfast in the breakfast room from 08:00 to 10:00 h. On sunny days, breakfast is served on the terrace in the wonderful garden as well.
There are some restaurants in the vicinity of the hotel, but if you take a stroll of 10 to 15 minutes to the Leidseplein, you will find numerous brasserie and restaurants to suit everybody's taste. There is an abundance of other entertainment venues at the square as well.

Internet

All rooms have access to free wireless internet. People without a laptop can make free use of the internet computer in the sunroom.

Review the room, before accepting
Location, although parking a car might be a challenge.
We stayed in room nr 14. In bathroom, upper board of the door, was very dirty. You can see dark blue dirt lines with drops of it - it was terrible. Lighting lamp of the "living room" was very dusty inside, nobody had cleaned for months. A bible was used to keep an heavy window open, we removed this. Reception refused to change coins for parking, as they are not an exchange machine. What if I would have liked to have a beer - could not sell - no exchange? After 450 km driving, we had to go to city to begg for a change, it was imparrasing. Breakfast was 15 euros per person, as if in luxury hotell. Instead we had good breakfast at bakery for 11 Euros for two adults. Last time we stayed at Prince Hotel, the same street, nothing special, but clean and friendly. I am glad we did not have children along this time. Never ever again.

reasonable accomodation for reasonable price.
Quiet side street bordering Voldenpark, off center yet central. Walking distance to major museums, jordaan, actually to everywhere.
Clean but not meticulous. Towels were not clean yet changed upon request.

A Philosopic Hotel needs a Philosophic Breakfast
I have stayed in better rooms at the same hotel. This time I landed up on the other side of the street. I will certainly use the Filosof again, BUT see my Breakfast suggestion below!
I have stayed in much better rooms at the same hotel. This time I landed up on the ground floor across the street with workmen outside of the window. A big problem was that a staff member urgently knocked on my door after I had gone to sleep because of a possible leakage. After some time I lett him in. Nothing was found. This was a very insecure method of communication. I should have been conracted by phone before the door knocking. I have eating better breakfast in other hotels. This breakfast was not very "Philosofic". Here the hotel the Filosof could learn from another Hotel in the same class range: ie AXEL HOTEL GULLSMEDEN in Copenhagen Denmark. The Filosof could with big benefit copy their "Philosphic" breakfast. Send someone to check it out.

Nice hotel
Room is clean and neat; Free internet available in the lobby; Location is not that central but still manageable, with only 15-20 minutes walk to the Musuem Quarter.
Luggage can be "stored" in a corner at the reception area before check-in or after check-out. Guests have to compete for spaces. By the time I collected mine, the lock of my luggage was detached and lost but I haven't lost anything fortunately.

beautiful stairwell! nice to have access to coffee in the morning without having to buy the entire breakfast. very comfortable beds.

Nice atmosphere, nice garden, nice building.
30 euros for cereal breakast is ridiculous, I feel I got ripped off, it wasnt clear that no breakfast was included, they obviously take advantage of that. Room too small for 2 people, beds too small, especially for price

Helpful personel, nice breakfast
The room I got, although characterised as a "DELUXE" room was at least very poor equiped, old fashioned, half below the earth (floor -1), nothing to do with an acclaimed deluxe room. Although I have arranged for a double bedroom, I I arrived just my self because of an accident. I asked at least to pay the second day for a single room, and guess what....they refused. Very remote from downtown, trying to get customers with the philosophical attitude. Fowr me phisophy doesnt mean lack of comforts....

Staff wewre very friendly and attentive. The room was comfortable mordern very stylish. All the relevant facilities were available.
I felt given that it was new years the price for the room was too high. There was a draft in the room when the heating was not turned on.

Has charm. Reception and lounge area are nice, garden would be lovely in summer. Room was clean, comfy and charming. Very quiet.
Staff not that friendly. Philosophical theme done in a slightly tacky way, in our room anyway. Average breakfast, especially for the price.

Nice location
Run down room with the comfort of a student dormitory. I booked the luxury room, which was rather large. But the bathroom had not been redone since 1965 and the interior was a big collection of 'ouwe meuk'

Decent sized room and bath--very comfortable for the price. Quiet neighborhood with easy access to the trams. Breakfast included, which is always a plus.
Customer service was severly lacking--a smile and warm welcome at check-in would've been a nice touch. The receptionist made it clear she couldn't answer my question til she finished what she was doing and then gave appeared annoyed that I would ask something about the city. I could've done without the attitude.

Location and decor.
inadequate space for hanging clothing; lack of detail in looking after the towels and soap supplies in the bedroom; room too small to functin comfortably as a double room.

The hotel is situated in a beautiful neighbourood, close to Vondelpark. The hall, the brakfast room, and the garden are very nice. The staff was helpful and spoke english very well.
The rooms are a bit small. That could be considered normal in A'dam.

Away from the busy centre of Amsterdam but easily accessible tram stops. Walking distance from Vondelpark.
No tea/coffee making facilities. Not overly impressed with the cleanliness of the shower/bathroom. Having to queue for the toaster in a restricted space- especially as only half the toaster was in working order!

Very helpful staff, and fairly silent street. Price was reasonable. The rooms each have a special design - our was a bit tacky, but it had its charm.
Parking is possible on the street, but it it really expencive - 19 euro pr day. The room was REALLY small, but then again we werent there to stay in the room. There were some weird stains on the carpet and the bed had a plastic cover on the matress which made it really uncomfortable. The bed was also extreamly hard and worn down.

good bed, location, staff
Good location. Quiet street close to Vondelpark. Nice and friendly staff. Decent breakfast but not very special. Got a free upgrade to a suit in a seperate building accross the hotel. Good bed. Reasonable TV room. Did not like interior design very much, nor the sofa. For this suite (number 135), for which they normally charge approx. 300 Euro, the bathroom is absolutely below standards. A build in closet combination of toilet, shower and a small sink on 2.5 m2. Reminded me of my student days in Amsterdam. These were happy times for me, so overall I am happy with my stay.

Quietly situated near to Vondelpark, but close enough to Amsterdam center, on foot or by tram, to make city visiting easy. The hotel has lots of charm with well decorated rooms, clean & comfortable. Breakfast is interesting, lots of people in a slightly crowded but friendly atmosphere. All in all a very pleasant stay at a reasonable price. Thankyou.

The public rooms and the garden are very nice. My single was very comfortable despite its small size and the bathroom looked as if it had been recently remodeled. (The supply of hot water was terrific.) The location is nice and quiet, yet it's easy to get everywhere you want to go on foot or by tram. The hotel has character -- much more than the average chain hotel would have.
The bathroom was cleaned thoroughly every day; however, the bedroom had clearly not been dusted or vacuumed in some time. The staff were always pleasant but the response to some requests like clean towels wasn't always efficient.

Both rooms were charming. Our room had a private garden which was very nice. The garden for the main hotel was really lovely. Breakfast was very well done. The people at the desk were helpful, and the location was great.
There was construction noise in the mornings which we were not expecting.
