Description
Antwerp offers numerous markets, the most famous being the Grote Markt with the famous statue of Silvius Brabo. The city provides you with an authentic Flemish atmosphere from the amusing Foltermuseum (museum of torture) to the impressive Rubenshuis and, of course, the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten (fine arts). Antwerp offers something for everyone and carries a rich tradition in fashion design and evidence of this tradition can be found at the Fashion Museum which is opposite the hotel. Fashion and shopping enthusiasts will certainly enjoy the Meir street which presents trendy brands within a friendly environment.
In the Hotel National all of the rooms are equipped with a shower, toilet, television, telephone and hairdryer. The hotel offers meeting and conference services with facilities for up to 60 persons.
According to folklore, Antwerp gained its name from the brave Roman soldier Silvius Brabo who slayed the giant and bullying gatekeeper Druon Antigoon at the River Schelde. The merciless giant denied access to the open sea and treated those who did not pay their river tax in a most horrible way; fishermen who did not pay lost their hand. Silvius Brabo intervened and chopped off the giant's hand and thew it into the River Schelde. After this exceptional deed of 'hand throwing' (in Dutch: handwerpen) the name transformed into Antwerpen. A statue of Slivius Brabo can be admired at the central market place in the inner city not far from your hotel.
