Score of 21 reviews: 8.7

The village of Baarlo is often referred to as 'castle village' due to the presence of no less than four castles. One of these castles is Château De Raay, dating back to the 13th century. Throughout the years there have been many renovations although authentic ornaments and immemorial flagstones were preserved. In addition to the hotel, the Art Center de Raay is located on the premises, resulting in a nice blend of art and comfort. The Art Center even stretches to the hotel rooms, which include charming pieces of art.

All rooms are spacious and hava a unique atmosphere. They are equipped with present-day conveniences under which a mini bar, shower and/or bath, hair dryer, coffee and tea making facilities, desk, Internet connection, seating and television with movie channel. Egyptian linen, down feather blankets and quality pillows guarantee a pleasant night's rest.

The entourage of the castle ensures a comfortable atmosphere for meetings and conferences of any kind. The gardens and the estate lend itself perfectly for weddings. The waterworks and beautiful terraces form a tasteful whole. In the 'wintertuin,' a splendid glass patio, dinners for up to 300 guests can be arranged.

Nice romantic hotel accessible by car or taxi only
  • + Big room, huge and well equipped bathroom (inclusive bath for 2 and bidet), romantic place, nice architectural mix of old and new
  • Very soft beds - if you like harder mattress, you need to ask the reception prior to your stay, location - you need car to reach the hotel

Stylish hotel that doesn't quite live up to expectations.
  • + We had a lovely room and the food was fabulous. The château is in a lovely setting which has been beautifully restored and modernised.
  • On arrival there was a dirty wine glass in the room and one of the bedside lights did not work. This was not rectified during our stay. When we returned on the second day towels had not been refolded, dirty glasses were left by the bed and a dead wasp remained on the windowsill. We raised these points on leaving and were informed the manager would contact us - 4 days later I am still waiting. After spending over 500 Euros on a two night break I expect better.

  • + Liked the bathroom. Liked the bathroom amenities.
  • Room was small and peculiarly laid out with a bathroom door that you had to pass by before you could open because it hit the edge of the bed (very strange.) Had a very unpleasant experience at dinner with many flies bothering us to such a degree that we raced through our meal, skipped dessert, and left as quickly as possible. Mentioned to the waiter, never heard back from anyone. Would have left after the one day, but already booked for two. Most expensive and least enjoyable of all the hotels we stayed in during our two week (biking)trip to the Netherlands.
