Cathedral of Our Lady
One of the well-known sights in Antwerp is the Cathedral of Our Lady. This gothic cathedral in the centre of the city was built between 1352 and 1521. The 123-metre high north tower is the highest church tower in the Benelux. The cathedral has a carillon with 49 clocks. Two famous triptychs in the cathedral are by the Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens: The Descent from the Cross en The Raising of the Cross. Another work by the master is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. You can see more of his work in the Rubens House.
The interior of the cathedral is a mix of different styles such as baroque, rococo, and renaissance and it represents several centuries. There is a 14th century statue of the madonna, and in the devotional statue 'Our Lady of Antwerp' in the Mary chapel is from the 16th century.
