Market of Bruges
The Grote Markt (or Grand Place) is the main square of Bruges in the heart of the city. On the Grote Markt (or just: Markt) you will find the Belfry and a number of beautiful neo-Gothic buildings such as the Provincial Court. The square is surrounded by splendid old buildings and stepped-gabled houses. On the south side is the belfry and on the eastside is the Provincial Court, the seat of the West Flanders provincial council, and the red bricked post office building. Around the square are cafes, restaurants and shops.
The Bruges market was popular in the Middle Ages already and is still held on the square each week on Wednesday morning. Regularly, also various events take place on the square. The Tour of Flanders traditionally starts here and in the period around Christmas there's a Christmas fair and an ice rink.
