Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate
Fans of chocolate just need to use their sense of smell, that will guide them from the Grand Place to the nearby Museum of Cocoa and Chocolate. Visitors will discover a lot about chocolate, a popular Belgian speciality. Video footage and several display panels show how cocoa is grown and processed into delicious pralines.
Did you know that cocoa was already grown by the Mayas and Aztecs? They used cocoa butter as a medicine for burns and as sun protection. In the 16th century the Spaniards brought the Mexican cocoa water back to Europe. It took another century before the Belgians started processing cocoa. By adding various fillings, they created the pralines that we can now buy all over the world.
