Mechelen
The pleasant Flemish city of art Mechelen is an attractive destination for a short break or city trip. A defining element in the city’s silhouette is the St. Rumbold's Cathedral with its two carillions. You can follow the footsteps of Louis XV and Napoleon and climb the 500 steps in the tower. Carillons are still very popular in Flandres and almost every Flemish village has one. The Royal Carillon School is located in Mechelen.
Attractive Mechelen is one of the five Flemish cities of art and it has some beautiful sights. Around the market square in the centre are some beautiful 16th to 18th centuries façades. Museums in Mechelen that attract many visitors are the Toy Museum and Technopolis. Another popular attraction is the Planckendael zoo and castle. The Mechelen courthouse is located in the former Renaissance palace Court of Savoy where Charles V spent his childhood. The Fish Market is a little square on the Dijle river full of terraces, restaurants and cafés.
