Nijmegen itself claims to be the oldest city in the Netherlands and celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 2005. Undoubtedly, the most famous contemporary event is the annual four day walking event Vierdaagse in the third week of July . This is the largest walking event in the world and attracts about 40,000 walkers from around the world each year.
Also shopping enthusiasts are well catered for in this historic city. In 2008, Nijmegen won the prize for having the most diverse range of shops in the Netherlands. The lively entertainment centre is popular with the nightlife public and has many pubs and cafes that are open until the wee hours.
