Frisian islands
The fresh sea breeze and rippling waves will give you a wonderful holiday feeling whilst you sail to one of the Frisian islands. Each island has its own charm. Texel, which is part of North Holland is the largest Frisian island and has the most villages. You can enjoy cycling, horseriding, walking and even skydiving here. The other islands are part of the Friesland province.
The islands Terschelling and Ameland offer many pleasant outdoor cafés and entertainment venues. The Brandaris, on Terschelling, is the oldest lighthouse in the Netherlands.
Vlieland and Schiermonnikoog are lovely and quiet, as only islanders are allowed to drive here. The shell paths through the dunes and woods of Vlieland lead you along the most beautiful spots of the island. All year round you can go for wonderful walks along Schiermonnikoog's endless wide beaches. Crossing the mudflats is also a very popular activity during the summer.
To reach Texel you can take the boat from Den Helder. The ferry to Ameland leaves from Holwerd and the boat to Schiermonnikoog leaves from Lauwersoog. The ferries to Vlieland and Terschelling depart from Harlingen.
