Southern-Limburg
Those who think of the Southern Limburg region, often think of Maastricht, Valkenburg and the marl caves. And these are main attractions for a reason. Besides many cultural monuments, Maastricht is known for its pleasant restaurants, cafés and terraces as well as its characteristic southern atmosphere. Valkenburg aan de Geul is also referred to as the City of Marl. This marl been used to build with since the Roman Empire. Over the centuries the marl production has created corridors of over 250 kilometres in length. If you visit Valkenburg, a tour of these caves is an absolute must.
Valkenburg aan de Geul is surrounded by nature areas unique to the Netherlands. In May and June as many as twenty different types of orchids bloom in the Gerendal sanctuary. South of Valkenburg, near the Cauberg, lies the Polferbos where century old trees grow. Several walking and cycling paths lead you from the Cauberg to the towns of Berg en Terblijt and Vilt.
