Twente
The Twente region lies in the east of the province of Overijssel, next to the German border. The beautiful landscape, tranquility and friendly people make this region a perfect destination for a holiday or weekend trip. The are beautiful nature areas, estates and Saxon farms in this area. Twente is known for its old folk customs that are still in use, such as Easter fires and blowing the midwinter horn, which in some towns is called ox horn blowing. ‘Klootschieten’ – throwing a lead weighted wooden ball on a dirt track - is part of the region’s folklore.
Twente has picturesque villages and towns such as Ootmarsum, Delden and Diepenheim. Around the towns Nijverdal, Markelo and Denekamp are beautiful forests and hills. The towns Hengelo and Boekelo have been known for decades because of their salt production and Enschede became a city thanks to the textile industry. It is now a great place to go shopping.
You can cycle and walk for hours through the beautiful countryside in Twente. The distances of these routes vary and you can even make trips lasting several days.
