Hotel and Restaurant De Stripe Wijnjewoude is surrounded by woods and heathlands. At de Duurswouder you can take in the lovely and varied bog and turfland landscape, which formed many, many years ago. The typical dobben, (pools), characterise this landscape. One of the oldest signs of human existence in the Netherlands is the biface stone tool of Wijnjeterp. It is estimated to be between 60,000 and 150,000 years old, and you can view this in the regional museum of Gorredijk. It is also fun to take a turf tour along the old turf route from Gorredijk to Appelscha. You can take lovely tours either on foot, by bike or even in a huifkar (a covered wagon). The hotel proprietors will be happy to inform you about various options. The little church of Duurswoude dates from 1250 and is the oldest church in the municipality of Opsterland.
