NH Hotel de Ville is a luxurious 4-star hotel situated in the middle of Groningen. The narrow streets house countless boutiques and university buildings. Groningen is a real student city; nearly a quarter of the city's residents are studying either at the Rijksuniversiteit or the Hanzehogeschool. Groningen is blessed with several lovely courtyards of almshouses. For instance, the Pelstergasthuis dates back to the 13th century and has fulfilled various functions over the years. Although people now reside in many of the courts and former hospitals, the courtyards have open access and tours are also frequently organised here.

Groningen has several impressive buildings, including the Martini Tower. The tower, which was once 127 metres high, was dramatically reduced in height when a bonfire (after the departure of Spanish and Walloon troops in 1577) was responsible for the partial collapse of the tower. Nowadays, the tower is 97 metres high and is a recognisable sight from many spots across the city. Lost tourists only need to raise their heads to see the tower, which will lead them to the Grote Markt square.

Surroundings

Groningen is a tranquil but lively city. Almost one quarter of its inhabitants are students and the city has a rich history. A large part of the north can be reached from Hotel De Ville. The Northern coast, with its many fishermen's cottages and picturesque scenery, the source of inspiration for many Dutch painters, is well worth a visit. Within an hour you can reach the beautiful star-shaped fort of Bourtange, a fortified village established during the Eighty Years War from 1568 to 1648.

Food and Drinks

An elaborate breakfast buffet is served from Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 11:00, on Saturday from 08:00 to 11:00, and on Sunday from 08:00 to 12:00. In the beautiful 'garden room' guests can taste a wide variety of freshly baked rolls and croissants among other things. The kitchen serves seasonal dishes stemming from the Mediterranean cuisine. At Bistro 't Gerecht you can enjoy culinary delights in the form of 3 and 4-course menus as well as light bistro dishes. Guests can also determine the size of their portions.   • – Maid service was a bit 'hit and miss'. Coffee / tea / bathroom supplies were replenished (or not!) very randomly. The bins were not always emptied. There was no price list at the bar, so we had no idea of what was available, or how much it would be.
  • * my tip The nearby V&D store, on the square, provides a very lovey breakfast menu between 10am and midday.

  • + this hotel is very well situated close to everything. the atmosphere is really charming and welcoming the staff were really nice and very helpful (which is really important when you don't speak the language) I arrived to find out I had recieved a free room upgrade :D really great free coffee in the lobby! :D

Our Groningen home away from home!
  • + I could not even think about staying anywhere else when we visit Groningen! It's our home away from home and the amazingly comfortable sofas in the lounge have to be experienced to be believed.
  • – Only one very minor point. When travelling with a child uner 12 and you order an extra bed for your room, ensure that you mention the bed is for the child or you could be charged for it in error.
  • * my tip This hotel is in the perfect location for exploring Groningen. Take advantage of that to really see the city and get to know the people who live there. I have lived in the Netherlands for 12+ years and they are the friendliest Dutch people I have met so far!

  • – The room had stains on the walls that looked like somebody had spat at the wall, these stains had not been addressed. The television stand looked like it was from the local tip!!!!!!! There were marks on the carpet all over the place and the quilt cover had a large hole in it. The room nunber was 303 and the room totally let the standard of the hotel down. this was my wedding aniversary and my wife was very upset. I waited untill the end of our stay before reporting these faults to the reception because i didnt want to spoil or upset my wife by complaining, the moment we entered the room. At reception i was offered a free Capuchino as compensation, This left me with a bad impressiobn of the Hotel staff.

  • – room looked not finished. Bed was just 2 matresses and very poor quality. We counted the springs at night. Service was not very friendly and welcoming. TV was smaller than my laptop. With a little bit of effort this could be a really nice hotel but at this point they just missed the boat.

  • – Expensive parking fi you drive (you can drive about a mile away (outside the Nord train line) and park for free. It's a nice walk back in good weather. Also, the beds are bad if this is a romantic trip. There are 2 twin beds shoved together, not one large double/queen/king bed.
