Score of 108 reviews: 8.0

The hospitable Hampshire Hotel Groningen Centre lies just within the canal ring of Groningen, in a quiet location by the Oosterhaven. The hotel was entirely renovated in 2010. As such the hotel rooms and facilities have been spruced up and given a makeover. The hotel has a lift, a laundry service and it is possible to hire a bike at reception so that you can explore the city and its surroundings. You will quickly feel at home upon arrival at this hotel, thanks to the friendly and attentive staff.

If you're looking for a good night's rest, then this is the hotel for you, as it lies just outside Groningen's renowned nightlife area. The hotel rooms are spacious and come with excellent beds, plus it is also possible to open a window. There is a refreshing bathroom with a shower and toilet. You can head to Grand Café, the hotel's special breakfast area for a (complimentary) cup of tea or coffee. There is also a library, where guests regularly come to quietly read a newspaper or a book.

Surroundings

Hampshire Hotel Groningen Centre lies close to nice restaurants and cafes. The Kattendiep is certainly worth visiting. Opposite the Casino are various restaurants serving international cuisine, and the pleasant pavement cafes are teeming during warm weather. The romantic Via Vecchia alley harbours surprising little restaurants such as Boccaccio, Cervantes and Hemingway's Cuba. Cultural Groningen has three large theatres, the Stadsschouwburg, the Grand Theatre and the Oosterpoort, all in and around the centre. Going out can be enjoyed into the early hours: the pubs and clubs of Groningen are open until very late. It is easy to get everywhere by bike, and Groningen is a very bicycle friendly city.

Food and Drinks

An extensive international breakfast buffet is available at the Grand Café, Monday to Friday from 07:00 to 10:00, and at weekends from 08:00 to 11:00. The surrounding area offers a great choice of restaurants.

Great location and large, clean rooms but slightly expensive.
  • + The room and the bathroom were a good size and the bathroom was very clean. I appreciated the self-service (free) tea and coffee in the dining room upon arrival. The receptionist kindly arranged a taxi for us. The decor was nice in the room and in the lobby. Excellent location: close to the centre and to the station but in a quiet and pleasant street.
  • The carpet was a little stained in the room. One of the receptionists was not so friendly when we arrived but the others were very nice. A little expensive for the off-season.

Pleasant stay
  • + Not too far from the city centre
  • The bathroom was not too clean with the shower drain blocked. The heater coils was a little dusty/dirty so placing the towel there was not possible without cleaning it thoroughly.

Comfort and a little affordable luxury
  • + We stayed in a deluxe room on the 3rd floor and found it very spacious, comfortable and clean. We loved the view and were thrilled to find a huge bathtub in addition to the standalone shower. The bed was also very comfortable - we were sorry to leave!
  • * my tip The bar across the street, Café Peter Pan, has wonderful food and a nice atmosphere.

It was like living in Groningen (separate apt)
  • + The separate apartment (for four) was fun and handy. We enjoyed the stay.
  • No cleaning (three days). Did not bother us except for the trash.

Great location - shame about the coffee!
  • + Great location very close to the centre. Friendly staff.
  • Breakfast - the only coffee and tea available comes from a machine which tastes awful. This was a real let down given that we'd paid 16 Euros for breakfast over 3 mornings. Would be OK to stay there and just get breakfast and coffee elsewhere though.
  • * my tip Don't include breakfast when booking.

  • (Families with older children)
Business oriented / family unfriendly / good location
  • + Newly renovated. Clean
  • Unpersonalized receipt at Reception. Not a family hotel. Not enough light in the bathrooms. Lugage kept behind Reception Desk looks very unprofessional. Extra 15 euro p.p. for breakfast is a rip-off.

Nice hotel, good location, will come again
  • + Very nice hotel, relatively close to railway station and to city centre (Grote Markt). Ideal for city trip
  • We had to pay on arrival, which in a hotel this standard is unusual. The beds (mattresses) were way too soft.

Reasonable price, helpful staff, great location
  • + very helpful staff. a free upgrade to a room on the fifth floor with a wonderful view over the city. very good breakfast
  • better to be in the hotel looking out rather than the other way round as building is an eyesore. we made the mistake of hiring bikes from the hotel for the day, but discovered in the evening that the lights didn't work making for a hairy ride home.

Good for Groningen weekend!
  • + Location, friendly helpful staff. We received a city map with recommended restaurants with different accents (atmosphere, quality, hip) and things to do/see (shopping streets, towers, typical Groningen sights). Car can be parked in garage under hotel outside of daily work hours.
  • Breakfast had hot and cold offerings but was good but a little on the simple side.

Wonderful stay on a quiet street.
  • + We were booked into a different room but upon arrival discovered that the room was very hot, south facing and had no air conditioning. The hotel desk staff upgraded us to this very large luxury room for only 10 euros a night, so we were very pleased. We were on the top floor overlooking the canal so the view was wonderful. The complimentary coffee/tea in the mornings was also lovely as we could go down at any time and enjoy it, as well as the hotel computer that was nearby.
