+ quiet place, nice historical building, gives a "at home" feeling
- no toothbrushes in the room
Paul Cleary It was a real joy to stay in such a well-kept, well-run hotel

+ Excellent service and standard of English Beautifully maintained historic building Located in the centre of town Real vaue for money Own bakery adjoining the breakfast room - what could be fresher! The beautifully ornate fixtures in the bathroom
- Tiny points which prevented me from giving it a 10 TV remote was broken which meant sitting one metre away from TV if you wanted to watch There was no wall mirror in the bathroom, just a pedestal mirror. OK for shaving for me but I can imagine ladies would require something bigger
Twan Schellekens Nice restaurant, room worn off, for budget traveller
6.0
+ Nice friendly restaurant, good price/quality rate
- tried to book an arrangement: room+ diner , received cancellation call: room not available, Booked diner and same room separately (10 Euro +) room was available !.
Mary Bing Close and friendly

+ Very large, comfortable room with an amazing bathroom, the staff were helpful and friendly. The hotels location was very central to everything in town.
Gabriele Very nice hotel
9.4
+ excellent location in the city centre; beautiful historic building and interior; particularly recommendable in summer because of wonderful courtyard/patio; we had a very nice room on third floor with a huge terrasse overlooking the courtyard; the room was simple but spacious and spotless clean; spacious bathroom with bath and shower; excellent breakfast
- incredibly steep stairs leading to third floor (we had room 51) that require sporty climbing to get to the room (only feasible with light luggage !!); if you choose a twin bed room, be aware that beds are on rolls and drift apart with the slightest movement; very noisy on Friday and Saturday night (young people shouting in the streets - you can hear them even with the windows closed in winter !)
Tom Leemhuis Good and needs work

+ location, bed quality and food service very well done
- hallway odor, front desk closure on arrival .....poor
Anonymous Disappointing night at Hotel Schimmelpenninck Huys
5.6
+ Good service in the restaurant.
- Room was spotty and had only windows to a ventilation shaft/emergency escape stairway with no sunlight visible, very claustrophobic room. The décor, though, was fancy. The room was twin even though we asked for a double. Breakfast was of poor quality, nothing fresh was available (vegetables, fruit etc.), bread served on the table was still frozen from inside. When checking out the receptionist tried to â˜accidentally♠charge 50 euro extra on my card. Luckily I noticed before pushing ok on the PIN machine.
petur van den berg Luxury and quiet in the heart of groningen

+ nice classic hotel. some rooms have a view on the nice garden in the central square of the hotel. cool (semi-)antique interior. gold and marble in the bathroom give you the feeling of luxury. friendly personnel. quiet. cozy
Karen Broekhuizen Beautiful ambiance, but breakfast can be improved.
7.8
+ The environment, the location in Groningen. The ambiance and the garden in the middle. Furthermore, the furnishment in the rooms: very romantic.
- Unclarity at breakfast (what to get where/where to sit) and not enough bread, glasses and spoons. Service when having lunch in the garden can get better too (long waiting, putting the bill on roomnumber).
Hans I don't come again
4.6
+ some effort but not overlooked the most important part - a quiet night of sleep!
- noisy compressor all night and hot water pipes in the floor which heat up the room without a proper window to open up all the way.
andrew shaw Unique hotel
7.2
+ Very unique hotel, not the usual chrome and plastic!
- No parking but it is arranged close by and stairways to rooms are very steep and narrow which with luggage makes things exciting!
kathryn lee Charming, friendly, unique and useful location!!!
9.8
+ charming public spaces and clean comfortable rooms, light, open and individual each one (i've stayed before). excellent staff, good food esp. the breakfasts (fresh baked on premises breads etc.) it's one of the nicest hotels I've stayed in (biz traveller) because it feels homier than the usual on the road cookie cutter hotels!!!
- paint on walls a bit in need of a refresh (in the halls and bedrooms mostly) but it's not really a big deal since everything you care about is clean and so nice.
Anonymous Great hotel with friendly staff
8.8
+ The staff were wonderful, the room beautiful and clean, the lobby great with free Internet access and available computers. We got a room with an extra bed for a child and the room was very large. The staff helped greatly by calling the airport to resolve a luggage delay.
- The beds were kind of lumpy/creaky. The breakfast was too expensive so we never tried it.

+ Ambiance is agreeable, on the funky side. Breakfast very good; lounge and courtyard very comfortable.
- Service is spotty and my room was cramped and stuffy.

+ Interesting historic building, well furnished
- Attic room was unbearably hot with too little opportunity to get ventilation or cooling. Stairs upto the room were also difficult to climb with luggage.

+ Great atmosphere -- very comfortable bar, excellent restaurant.
- Low hanging lamps (2 meters, 6 feet 7 above the ground). Make for spectacular collisions, if you're more than that tall.

+ Location is very convenient - walking distance to centrum, bus stop & Groningen central station. Room is excellent, bathroom is large, staff is friendly & helpful, free WLAN internet was very helpful for me.
- Backyard could use some leaf-sweeping (I stayed there during the winter)

+ Excellent location.
- The room was a bit noisy and the street lights did make the room very light - could do with thicker curtains to help

+ The Hotel was very centrally located and was very clean, and staff were mostly friendly.
- To get to the room in which I was staying you had to walk through a kitchen to enter a very steep stairwell up to the room. Breakfast which was around ¤15 extra was quite ordinary and basic considering the cost involved. Also being a solo guest I was refused entry to eat in the main restaurant in the evening because they said it was fully booked, even though it was completely emtpy at the time I entered at around 7pm.

+ I can honestly say this was one of the best hotels i have stayed in, in the Netherlands in terms of all round price, cleanliness and service. We were upgraded to a suite (never asked for it)cos they knew it was our anniversary. Location is great also.

+ It is a restored old building so it has all the charms of such a place. Bathroom was modern and nice. It is it a great location within Groningen that makes walking to the train station, shopping dining and social spots all quite easy. The restaurants in and around the hotel are quite nice and a pleasure to visit.
- It is a restored old building and that always has its downside. No elevator near my room and the stairs were narrow and steep so if you have any large bags that is a hassle.
Ton Paans

+ Friendly service, excellent use of space in small room, nice decor.

+ Excellent service from friendly and obliging staff. really good position in the heart of the the old town.
- We were not warned about the steep stairs in the main building and had to upgrade my mother's room so that she could gain access at a lower level reached by a lift. She is 85 years old and found the ascent frightening to say the least.

+ The The setting of the hotel is amazing. It is a very old one, located at the heart of the town, and it has very nice and authentic looks. The two restaurants are very nice, and the common parts high standard. Beautiful and quiet. Large bathrooms with shower and bathtube, both practical and comfortable. The executive/honeymoon suite is amazing!
- Part of the stafff does not really speak english. Standard double beds are rather small for two people. The hotel is quite old, and this shows sometimes, e.g. regarding the windows, or the humidity. Overall, a little bit expensive for the level of comfort (rooms rather small except for the suites and despite large bathrooms, beds not comfortable enough...)

+ Everything else. Groningen is beautiful city.
- During our stay your hotel was undergoing radical renovation. This meant that outside my room tere were workers coming and going, hammering etc. I can understand this but I would have liked to have been warned beforehand.
