Attractions in Amsterdam
Historical buildings and churches can be found all throughout Amsterdam. The best way to enjoy it all, is to put on your best pair of walking shoes and take a stroll along the canals, squares and markets. It does not take up much time, because Amsterdam is quite compact. Many attractions are within walking distance from each other.
Another good way is to take a laidback cruise on a canal boat. During this tour, a guide will tell you about all the interesting sights along the route. Most of the canal cruise operators can be found near the Centraal Station (Central train station). This station is also worth a visit, because of its beautiful architecture.
The name of the Dutch capital derives from 'Dam at the mouth of the Amstel River'. A must-see during your trip is the Dam square with its National Monument and the Royal Palace.
One can enjoy over 7.000 listed sights and buildings in Amsterdam. Even some hotels are listed, such as NH Doelen Hotel and the NH Schiller Hotel. Some other monuments are the Beurs van Berlage (former building for stock exchange) and the former office of a shipping line: 'Pier 10', which is now a restaurant.
Some churches in Amsterdam were built centuries ago. The oldest church was founded around 1300, hence the name 'Oude Kerk' (Old Church) Another famous church is the Westerkerk (Western Church), which was built around 1600. This church appears in many songs, because it has always been an icon for the district of the 'Jordaan'.
You are spoilt for choice in Amsterdam: taking pictures of canal houses, having a nice picknick in the Vondelpark, admiring Rembrandt's 'Nightwatch', visiting the Red Light District, or learning more about animals in Artis Zoo.
Luckily, there are many attractions that you can visit for free. This will leave you some spare cash, which you can spend on a shopping spree, or even to have a nice dinner.
