De Waag in Amsterdam
De Waag (Weighing House) stems from the Middle Ages and was constructed in 1488. Tradesmen used to weigh their goods here, such as butter and cheese. A weighing fee had to be paid on these goods, which can now be seen as a precursor to VAT or as it's known in Dutch, BTW.
De Waag was originally one of the city gates and formed part of the old city wall. The Waag lost its former function when this defence wall was torn down in the 16th century and went on to house guilds for some time, such as painters, smiths and masons. Once the guilds were dissolved, the building functioned as two museums and even housed a fire brigade.
Since 1996 it has been the location of café-restaurant In de Waag. You can enjoy a tasty lunch and dinner at this restaurant. It is also a great spot for drinks and meetings. Historical packages are also possible upon request.
