Hortus Botanicus in Amsterdam
The botanical garden (the Hortus Botanicus) boasts over 4,000 different types of plants. This garden offers a silent retreat in the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam.
It started out as a herbal garden. Most of these herbs were made into medicine. The V.O.C. vessels (Dutch East India Company) brought with them many exotic spices from Southeast Asia, as well as exotic plants. The Hortus Botanicus still plays an important role in the preservation of different plant species.
Within the garden you will find one of the most beautiful and quiet outdoor terraces of Amsterdam: the Orangery. This 'pavillion' is a listed building and is often used for parties and meetings.
