Montelbaanstoren in Amsterdam
The Montelbaanstoren was built in 1516 on the banks of the canal 'Oude Schans'. This tower was part of the city fortification. From the top the guards could see the enemies approaching from afar.
Sailors used to gather at the Montelbaanstoren before they set off on one of their journeys. Nowadays the tower is used by the local council as office space.
The tower used to be ridiculed for a long time as its chimes played so irregularly. That problem has long been solved and people can now rely on the fact that they´re hearing the correct time.
Rembrandt lived closeby and as such immortalised this tower through many of his artworks.
Near the Montelbaanstoren are the Stopera and the Rembrandthuis.
