National Monument on the Dam in Amsterdam
Right in the middle of Dam Square is where you will find the Nationaal Monument (National Monument), designed by J.J.P Oud and revealed in 1956.
This monument was founded for the commemmoration of soldiers and victims of World War II. Sorrow, resistance and victory are represented by the different parts that make up this statue.
Eleven urns were placed within the surrounding wall. They contain soil taken from the cemeteries of the former eleven Dutch provinces.
Every year on the 4th of May, many people gather at Dam Square for the Nationale Dodenherdenking (Remembrance of the Dead). People lay flowers around the monument during this ceremony and pay their respects to the war victims by observing a two minute silence. This ceremony is attended by the Dutch Queen and members of parliament.
