New Church in Amsterdam
The late-Gothic Nieuwe Kerk (New Church) was built in the 15th century and is located right next to the Royal Palace on the Dam Square. It was the second church to be built in Amsterdam (the first one being the Old Church). Members of the Dutch royal family have been inaugurated in this church since 1815.
In 1421 a large part of the city of Amsterdam burnt down and the Nieuwe Kerk fell victim to the fire, as it did again in 1452. The roof caught fire in 1645 and disappeared completely, but the church was restored with stained-glass windows including a remembrance window.
With church attendances considerably dropping during the 20th century, the church reopened its doors shortly before the coronation of Queen Beatrix in 1980. It has since been used as an art gallery and exhibition space, a perfect way to make use of the beautiful space during the long periods in between coronations.
