Oude Kerk in Amsterdam
The Oude Kerk (Old Church) is the oldest remaining building of Amsterdam. It was founded around 1250 and originally served as a Catholic Church. Because of its historical importance, it has been declared a 'European Monument'.
Amsterdam suffered from two enormous fires, in 1421 and 1453. Great parts of the city burnt down, but the Oude Kerk was miraculously saved. In 1566 the building did suffer from the 'iconoclastic fury', when many images in the church were destroyed.
The 'Oude Kerk' is nicknamed 'the living room of Amsterdam', because it has served so many different social, cultural and economical purposes throughout the ages. Many former inhabitants of the city were buried underneath the church, the tombstones on the church floor still bear witness to that.
Near the Oude Kerk you will find de Waag and the Dam.
