Royal Palace in Amsterdam
The Royal Palace was built in 1648 as a city hall. The power and wealth of Amsterdam was reflected in the building and its interior design: sculptures and paintings by the greatest artists of the time. In 1808, the city hall was turned into a palace.
The large collection of Empire style furniture, chandeliers and clocks date from this period. The enormous Burgerzaal is an assembly room. It has a marble floor with maps of the eastern and western hemispheres and all the known lands of that time. Nowadays, the Royal Palace is used for ceremonial occasions by Her Majesty Queen Beatrix, as well as an exhibition place.
