Sint Nicolaaskerk in Amsterdam
The Sint Nicolaaskerk (Church of Saint Nicholas) is located right across the Amsterdam Centraal Station. It was designed by the architect A.C. Bleijs and was built between 1884 and 1887.
The building is a mixture of Neo-Baroque and Neo-Renaissance. Inside the church you can admire the stained-glass windows, as well as a painting depicting the life of Saint Nicholas.
This church was named after the patron Saint of Amsterdam: Nicolaas van Myra. In the Netherlands, people celebrate the name day of St. Nicholas on the 5th December, which is called Sinterklaas. In the evening people exchange gifts, sometimes accompanied by a poem.
Near the Sint Nicolaaskerk you can find the Beurs van Berlage, NEMO Museum and the Kalverstraat.
