Westerkerk and Westertoren in Amsterdam
The Westerkerk (Western Church) was founded in 1631. This Protestant church was designed in Renaissance style by H. De Keyser. It has the highest church tower of Amsterdam.
This church really stands out in the Jordaan district, because of its location and its high tower, measuring 85 meters. This tower was often mentioned in the famous diary of Anne Frank. During World War II she, together with her family, had to hide from Nazi persecution. She could see the clock tower from their attic and hear its chiming. You can find the Anne Frank House near the Westerkerk, as well as a small statue of her.
Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus married in the Westerkerk on the 10th March 1966. This wedding was rather controversial, as Claus had the German nationality. The wedding could only take place once they gained approval from the Dutch government. Many people demonstrated against it on the wedding day, and as such this Royal wedding made news headlines all over the world.
You can climb the tower during the summertime, where you'll be rewarded with a gorgeous view across the city and the Jordaan district. Also near the Westerkerk is the Homomonument a memorial for commemorating those who have been persecuted for their homosexuality. Unusual shops in the 9 straatjes (9 little streets) and the Bijbels Museum (Biblical Museum) are also nearby.
