Begijnhof and Begijnhofkapel in Amsterdam
The Begijnhof (Beguines' court) and its chapel can be found between the streets Spui, Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal and Kalverstraat. This 14th century court houses some historical buildings and even an English Reformed church.
Beguines lived here for centuries. These religious women took care of sick people. They bore close resemblance to nuns, although they enjoyed greater freedom.
Beguines could leave this court when they wanted to get married, and were not restricted to life in a convent.
On the premises you can now also find the 'Begijnhofshop'. This shop offers candles, postcards and religious books.
You will find the entrance of this court at the Gedempte Begijnensloot, which is close to Spui. The chapel is located at Begijnhof 30 and the Begijnhofshop is at Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 371.
