Begijnhof and Begijnhofkapel in Amsterdam
The Begijnhof (Beguines' Court) and its chapel can be found between the streets Spui, Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal and Kalverstraat. This 14th century court houses some historical buildings including an English Reformed church.
Beguines lived here for centuries. These religious women took care of sick people. They bore close resemblance to nuns, although they enjoyed greater freedom. Beguines were not restricted to life in a convent and could leave this court whenever they wanted, even to get married.
You can now find the Begijnhof Shop on the premises. The shop sells candles, postcards and religious books.
The entrance to this court is on the Gedempte Begijnensloot, which is close to the Spui. The chapel is located at Begijnhof 30 and the Begijnhof Shop is on Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal 371.
