Ferry across the river IJ in Amsterdam
If you want to let the wind blow through you hair, then hop on one of the free ferries, which will quickly take you to North Amsterdam.
The boats cross the IJ river, which used to be part of the Zuiderzee (Southern Sea). Certainly a recommendation for ship and harbour enthusiasts.
There are two ferry boats, which are free of charge. One of them goes to Adelaarsweg, the other to Buiksloterweg.
If you don't mind paying a small fee you could also take the ferry to the Java-eiland (Java island). This new neighbourhood is particularly interesting for those you appreciate contemporary architecture. Here you will find a mix of modern canal buildings, design bridges and communal gardens.
The ferry boats depart from behind Amsterdam Centraal Station at docks 7 and 8.
