N.A.P. in Amsterdam
The Normaal Amsterdams Peil (N.A.P.) (Amsterdam Ordnance Datum) stands in the passage between the city hall and the Muziektheater. It is used as a benchmark to gauge water levels throughout most of Europe.
The NAP's gauge consists of three glass tubes each filled with water. Two tubes give the current seawater levels in Vlissingen (Flushing) and IJmuiden. The third tube shows how high the water stood during the great flood of 1953 in the Dutch province Zeeland.
Next to the gauge hangs an artwork. It shows a cross-section of the Netherlands, indicating which parts of the Netherlands are currently under sea level.
