Schuttersgalerij in Amsterdam
Hidden in a small street between the Kalverstraat and the Begijnhof are fifteen 17th century militia paintings portraying historical schuttersgilden (Civic Guard Guilds). The gallery is part of the Amsterdam Historisch Museum.
This building housed an orphanage up until 1960. The girls and boys had to live separately with the alleyway dividing them. The alleyway has since been covered and now people can view the historical militia paintings here. It was the only place where they could hang due to their sheer size.
