Schuttersgalerij in Amsterdam
In a small street between the Kalverstraat and the Begijnhof you will find 15 militia paintings that portray historical 'schuttersgilden' (civic guard guilds) from the 17th century. This gallery is part of the Amsterdam Historisch Museum.
Until 1960 this building housed an orphanage. In those days the girls had to live separate from the boys. In the alleyway, that used to divide the building in two parts, people can now enjoy the historical militia paintings. It was necessary to hang the paintings in this alleyway, because of their measurements.
