Joods Historisch Museum in Amsterdam
The Joods Historisch Museum (Jewish Historical Museum) is the only museum in the Netherlands, which focuses on Jewish history and culture. It is located in a beautiful, renovated synagogue in the former Jewish district in Amsterdam.
Art, historical objects and ceremonial items are displayed in the Large Synagogue. There are also short documentaries, in which Jews tell of their experiences relating to Judaism. The result is a good insight into the diversity of modern Jewish life.
The former Hollandse Schouwburg (Dutch Theatre) is also part of the museum. During World War II Jewish people had to report here before they were deported. Nowadays this hall is an educational monument to commemorate the many victims.
