Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam
In 1926 the Tropenmuseum opened its doors to public in Amsterdam. It used to be located in the city of Haarlem and was then called the 'Koloniaal Museum' (colonial museum).
Its collection consisted of raw materials and products from former Dutch colonies.
The collection of the museum has changed gradually, and now focuses on many different cultures. It is renowned for its large anthropological collection.
With its artistic and ethnological collection it tries to stimulate knowledge and the interaction between cultures.
The Tropenmuseum is part of the 'Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen' (Royal tropical institute), together with the Tropentheater.
Inside the museum you can also find the Tropenmuseum Junior, which was opened in 1974. This part of the museum focuses on children that are between 6 and 12 years old, but the interactive exhibitions are really fun to visit with your whole family.
