Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam
The Tropenmuseum is the successor of the Koloniaal Museum in Haarlem, which was established in 1871. The aim of this museum was to display raw materials and local crafts and industry stemming from the former Dutch colonies. After moving to its current location in east Amsterdam in 1926, the museum gradually shifted its focus to cultures other than those from the former Dutch colonies.
The Tropenmuseum is renowned as a leading anthropological museum. It tries to stimulate knowledge and the interaction between cultures by means of its expansive artistic and ethnological collection. The Tropenmuseum is part of the 'Koninklijk Instituut voor de Tropen' (Royal Tropical Institute), together with the Tropentheater.
Tropenmuseum Junior also makes up part of the museum. It was opened in 1974 and focuses on children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old. The interactive exhibitions really are fun and great to visit with your whole family.
