Magna Plaza shopping centre in Amsterdam
This building was designed by the architect C.H. Peters. In 1992 it was put on the list of ten most important buildings in Amsterdam. The building is designed in a Neo-Gothical style and is built on no less than 4560 poles.
The citizens of Amsterdam gave the building the name 'Perenburg' which means something like 'Pearcastle', due to the fact that the building has pear-shaped towers.
The former main post office building was transformed into the shopping mall Magna Plaza in 1992. There are many clothes shops, bars and restaurants to be found, as well as a big music store and jewellery shop.
Magna Plaza is very centrally located. Some well known attractions in the neighbourhood are: the Royal Palace on Dam square, the National Monument, Madame Tussauds and the Beurs van Berlage. The attractive working-class area 'Jordaan' is within walking distance, as well as the shops in the Kalverstraat.
