Royal Theatre Carré in Amsterdam
The name Carré stems from Oscar Carré, who was the head of a famous German circus family. In 1887 he commissioned the build of this stone circus theatre. Within two years, the theatre was a great success and the audience travelled great distances to come and see the Carré family perform.
The family toured during the summer meaning the circus was only open during the winter months, leaving the theatre empty for the main part of the year. It was therefore quickly filled with other variety acts and so the theatre gained a multi-functional character. After having been established for 100 years, Carré was given permission to be able to use the designation 'Royal', and so became Koninklijke Theater Carré (Royal Carré Theatre).
Many Dutch actors and comedians have dazzled the audience with their performces in Carré. In recent year this theatre is very much known for its musicals, such as My Fair Lady, Cats and Les Misérables.
