Royal Theatre Carré in Amsterdam
The stone building of the Koninklijk Theater Carré was opened in 1887 for public. It was founded by the Carré family, who were known for their circus acts. Their performances attracted many people to the city. In wintertime the circus took place in this theatre, but in summertime the family toured outside Amsterdam. This left the theatre empty for months. A solution was found for this problem, when other variety shows found their way to the theatre. It turned out into a multi-functional theatre.
The cultural importance of this theatre was recognised and it even received the designation 'Royal'. The name was therefore changed into Koninklijk Theater Carré (Royal Carré Theatre).
Many Dutch actors and comedians performed in Carré. This theatre is also known for its musicals, such as 'My Fair Lady', 'Cats' en 'Les Misérables'.
