Stadsschouwburg in Amsterdam
The first Stadsschouwburg (City theatre) of Amsterdam was opened in 1638. This wooden structure was designed by Jacob van Campen and used to be located at the Keizersgracht. The renowned writer Joost van den Vondel wrote his masterpiece 'Gysbrecht van Aemstel' especially as an opening play for the theatre. This play was appreciated by a great audience. It even became the traditional opening play of each theatre season, for years after.
In the 18th century a new Schouwburg was opened at the current location of the Leidseplein. Unfortunately this building burnt down in 1890. It did not take long to build a new theatre. In 1894 the building work had finished and the new Stadsschouwburg, in Neo-Renaissance style, opened its doors to public and can be visited ever since.
The 'Toneelgroep Amsterdam (Theatre group Amsterdam) is resident to the Stadsschouwburg. This group is currently the largest repertory theatre company in the Netherlands. They have already played pieces like 'Taming of the shrew', but they also offer adapted versions of classic plays. In the Stadsschouwburg you can also enjoy dance performances as well as theatre shows especially for children.
