Mayer van den Bergh Museum
The art collection of the collector Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858-1901) is housed in a museum at the Lange Gasthuisstraat in Antwerp that bears his name. The art collection is still the same as when he was alive and it includes paintings and monumental sculptures.
The museum was founded by his mother and is entirely in 16th century style. The late Gothic and Renaissance decorations of the facades recall not only the Golden Age in Antwerp, but also reflect the artistic taste and preference of the collector himself.
Mayer van den Bergh's interest was art of the Netherlands from the 14th to the 17th century. The collection of paintings includes works by the Flemish Primitives and also the oldest painting that is kept in a Belgian collection: Virgin and Child and four scenes from her life. It was painted by the Italians Simeone and Machilone of Spoleto and it can be dated to around 1275. Bruegel's work Dulle Griet is one of the highlights of the museum.
