Meir shoppingstreet
The car-free Meir is one of the main shopping streets in Antwerp. Besides many small shops you will find chains like H & M and C & A. Many shops on the Meir are located in historic buildings. Interesting buildings on the Meir are the Meir Palace and the City Festival Hall which now serves as a luxurious shopping centre.
The Meir starts at the Groenplaats in the old town and runs into the Leysstraat, not too far from the Central Station. The Wapper street, where the famous Rubens House is located, comes out on the street. The Meir is a popular street to hang out for citizens of Antwerp. The name ‘meir’ is derived from the word 'meer' (lake) as the Meir used to be a timber lake. (A place where wood that was meant for furniture was kept wet for a while).
