East Flanders
East Flanders is one of the five Flemish provinces of Belgium. It consists of a number of regions, each with its very own charm. The heart of the province is the medieval art city of Ghent with its magnificent St. Bavo Cathedral. Historic buildings, a car-free city centre, cosy terraces and restaurants are just some of the reasons why you should visit this city again.
In the Flemish Ardennes one finds ancient towns, castles and characteristic churches. In the region of the Scheldt, which is abundant in water, you can make a boat trip on the Scheldt or go cycling or walking past beautiful castles and charming villages. The region Lys and the rural region Meetjesland are wonderful areas for walking and cycling. In the area Waasland, ornate castles are interspersed with imposing forts and ancient abbeys. Reportedly, this is the region where Reynaert the Fox used to roam around.
