Casino Kursaal Ostend
Since the mid-19th century, the Kursaal was prominent in Ostend. In 1998, Casino Kursaal became a protected monument. After German example, the first – wooden -Kursaal was built in the middle of the 19th century, but the building was later replaced by a stone building at another location on the seawall. By the end of the 19th century, the Kursaal was renovated with lots of marble, granite and oak.
In 1940, the Kursaal was razed to the ground by command of the German occupying forces and it had to make way for a bunker complex. After the war, the building of a new Kursaal was an absolute condition for many Ostend residents, mainly to preserve the image of a stylish seaside resort. The current Casino Kursaal is a lot bigger than its predecessor and it offers beautiful sea views from the concert hall and ballroom. The many works of art, murals and statues supply the Casino Kursaal with the allure of the past again.
