Amersfoort
In 2009, Amersfoort celebrated its 750 years of city rights, proving how old the history is of this beautiful place. It is still visible in the city centre; the medieval section is very well preserved and typically Dutch canals complete the picture. Some city gates are still visible and are as impressive now as when they were built. You can also go shopping or have a drink on a terrace within the confines of the canals.
A fun fact is that Amersfoort is the geographical centre of the Netherlands. Two metal strips were installed at the Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren (Our Dear Lady Tower), indicating the exact middle point of the Netherlands. You'll find many beautiful forests outside the city. The countryside around Amersfoort is beautiful and certainly worth walking or cycling through. If you cycle a bit further, you can visit Drakensteyn, the Piramide van Austerlitz or the Soestdijk Palace.
