Deventer
This old Hanseatic town in the eastern Netherlands dates back from the 9th century and is home to a lot of history. However, not only the history makes this city so attractive. The city council is committed to put this beautiful city back on the map. Since 1990, a Dickens festival is held annually around Christmas. In a colourful parade, various characters from the books of the English literary celebrity march through the city. This festival is has now become well-known and attracts an average of 150,000 visitors per year. You can't imagine Deventer without it anymore.
Each year on the first Sunday of August, the largest outdoor book market of Europe is held in Deventer. From 09:30 h., than 800 book stalls are set up along the river IJssel. More than a hundred thousand books are displayed along a route of about 6 kilometer. This market attracts an average of about 120,000 visitors and in 2009 the 21st edition takes place. The historic town of Deventer is full of beautiful old buildings such as the tower of the church Grote Kerk, the historic town hall complex and the Bergkwartier. Along the IJssel you can have a beautiful walk and unwind. Deventer has something for everyone.
