Leiden
Leiden breathes the atmosphere of the Golden Age. In the 17th century, the Golden Age was a boom period for the whole of the Netherlands. It's influence was perhaps somewhat larger for Leiden. As well as showcasing beautiful architecture along the old Dutch canals, the town centre also has nine windmills, some of which are accessible to the public. Canal boat trips are plentiful and a perfect way to relax and enjoy the town's beauty from the water.
Rembrandt van Rijn is Leiden's most famous former resident. He was born here and you will still find traces of him throughout this town. Leiden is very proud of this painter, and rightly so!
Whilst walking around, you can enjoy the hidden courtyards, the old university, various churches and museums. Are you more of a shopaholic? Then Leiden, dubbed the Sleutelstad (Key city), is the place for you. Leiden is also perfectly situated for day trips. The bulb fields are only a tulip's throw away, the beaches are easy to get to Noordwijk is one of them), as are cities such as Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam.
