Maritime Museum Zierikzee
The Zierikzee skippers were globe-trotters who did not shy from sailing to exotic destinations such as Greenland and Indonesia. The maritime museum houses the oldest collection of ship models in the Netherlands (1627). Unique are the fossilized bones, dating over 2 million years old, and the mammoth teeth, which were fished out of the Oosterschelde waterway. The building itself is over 500 years old and used to be a city jail. The oak walls still show some inscriptions and drawings that were left by the former inmates. The oldest one dates back to 1577.
