Frisian Lakes

There are many large and small lakes in the province of Friesland. The Frisian lakes region is a paradise for watersports enthusiasts. Here you can enjoy swimming, sailing, canoeing, surfing, wakeboarding or fishing. The largest lakes in the region are the Fluessen, the Heegermeer and Tjeukemeer. Smaller lakes are the Sneekermeer and Langweerder Wielen. The 'Sneek Week' is the highlight of the summer season in Friesland and the annual skûtsjesilen also attracts many visitors.

Most places around the Frisian lakes have marinas and ports for passers-by. Sneek is the watersports capital of Friesland. The Frisian Maritime Museum lies in the centre of Sneek, which also has beautiful façades and warehouses. The magnificent water gate of Sneek is the symbol of the town. After a day of sailing you can have a meal or go out in Sneek. Grou and the picturesque village of Langweer also have a good night life. Apart from water the varied landscape is made up of stunning natural areas, meadows and characteristic farms. It is a great area for walking and cycling.
