Zeeland
Luctor et emergo (I struggle and rise up) is the motto of the province of Zeeland. It has been battling against the sea for centuries, but the Delta Works, brought about a big change for this region. The province consists of various former islands that were only opened up once the Delta Works were completed. When visiting this province, a trip to the visitor centre, Neeltje Jans, is not to be missed. But, Zeeland offers tourists much more. Everyone will find something to their liking: cyclists, sunbathers, boaters, shoppers and even mussel eaters!
The northernmost part of Zeeland is Schouwen-Duiveland. Its most well-known towns Burgh-Haamstede, Renesse and Zierikzee. Zuid-Beveland lies just below and its largest town Goes is the best shopping city in the province. Just east of this are the mussel and oyster towns Yerseke and Wemeldinge, which are definitely worth a visit. West of South Beveland lies Walcheren. Here are the cities of Vlissingen, where Michiel de Ruyter was born, and the stately Middelburg with a wonderful museum and interesting buildings. Veere is a quiet historic town with medieval buildings. The southernmost part of the province Zeeland is Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The major cities here are Terneuzen, Breskens and Cadzand.
