Maritime Museum Rotterdam
The Maritime Museum Rotterdam is the oldest maritime museum in the Netherlands. The foundation of the museum was a collection of ship models from the Royal Yacht Association that came into Rotterdam Council's possession in 1885. Prins Hendrik de Zeevaarder (Prince Henry the Navigator), son of King Willem II of The Netherlands and the Grand Duchess of Russia
Anna Paulowna, is the founder of the museum, which at that time bore his name.
The original collection has grown from three hundred to half a million maritime objects. The museum's collection includes ship models, paintings, navigational instruments and lots of images, film and video material.
Since 1986, the museum has been located on the Leuvehaven, at the end of the Coolsingel and next to Plein 1940. The building is shaped like a cube, diagonally cut in half, and was designed by Wim Quist. Also on the Leuvehaven is the museum ship Buffel, which is currently docked here.
