Description
The classic inn dates from 1860 and is named after the famous Frisian hero Pier Donia. This farmer battled against the Saxons and the Dutchmen that threatened to pillage Fryslan. A special statue was erected for him, which can still be admired adjacent to Herberg Greate Pier. The location of the inn is excellent for exploring Friesland. For instance, you can cycle the Elfstedentocht route or discover the scenic beauty, villages and cities from the water. Franeker, Sneek, Makkum or Hindeloopen are a number of towns worth visiting.
The inn is a small-scale hotels where peace and space are important spearheads. The rooms each have their own theme and are decorated attractively. Each rooms has a private bathroom with shower, toilet, hair-dryer and care products. Herberg Greate Pier offers a spacious front room with sitting area and flat-screen television. The hotel also has a house boat which lies by a quiet quay in the centre of Harlingen. Here you can enjoy a deluxe stay on the water with a kitchenette, spacious bedroom with bathroom and a sitting area on the foredeck or afterdeck.
Food and Drinks
Breakfast is served on weekdays from 07:00 to 10:00 h. and at weekends from 08:00 to 11:00 h. During daytime small lunch dishes are served in the restaurant. A lovely cup of coffee, tea or other drink can be obtained here as well. Dining at the inn is possible on reservation. The kitchen uses regional, seasonal produce. The bar is open daily until 22:00 h.

Surroundings
Herberg Greate Pier is situated in the heart of the mound village Kimswerd. The village lies in the province of Friesland or Fryslan, near the Afsluitdijk, which is a 30 kilometers long dam that seperates the former sea arm IJsselmeer and the Wadden Sea. In the village is the Laurentius church. The oldst part of the church dates from 1050. However, Kimswerd is also well-known for Pier the Great (Greate Pier). This was the most famous inhabitant who is known as the freedom fighter of Friesland. A statue was put up especially for him and still stands here. The area has lots to offer. The cities of Hindeloopen, Workum, Makkum, Franeker and Sneek can be easily reached from here and the ferries to Terschelling and Vlieland depart from Harlingen.
