Surroundings
As you walk through the historic village Nes you can easily discover its rich history. The old, beautifully restored houses and the church tower from 1723 all date from a period when the island Ameland was still an island of whale fishermen. The church tower was not so much for the worshippers as it was a beacon for sailors. Between several old commander's houses you can see whale jaws that are used to fence off the property. To the east of Nes lies the nature area De Hôn, where thousands of birds fly to when it is high tide. This nesting ground for more than 60 species of birds is a must for birdwatchers.
