About Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam

The first Stadsschouwburg (City Theatre) of Amsterdam was opened in 1638. This wooden structure was designed by Jacob van Campen and used to be located on the Keizersgracht. The renowned writer Joost van den Vondel specifically wrote his masterpiece Gysbrecht van Aemstel as an opening play for this theatre. From that moment on a long tradition was established. The theatre would start off every new year by showing this play.

A new Schouwburg was opened at the current location on the Leidseplein in the 18th century. Unfortunately this building burnt down in 1890. But it didn't take long to build a new theatre. In 1894 the building work had finished and the new Stadsschouwburg, in Neo-Renaissance style, opened its doors again to public.
